TACTIC (Tools, methods And training CommuniTies and society to better prepare for a Crisis)

Dr. A. Nuray Karanci  partner Middle East Technical University in the following EU 7th framework projects

The overall aim of the TACTIC project is to increase preparedness to large-scale and cross-border disasters amongst communities and societies in Europe. To achieve this, TACTIC will consider studies on risk perception and preparedness (including good practices and preparedness programmes) in order to develop a participatory community preparedness audit enabling communities to assess impacts in a multi-hazard context, their motivations and capacities to prepare for large-scale and/or cross-border disasters. This forms the basis for developing context-sensitive education and training strategies and practices that are embedded in an overarching long-term learning framework for increasing the overall prepares of communities and societies across Europe. Rather than taking a top-down approach to preparedness, TACTIC will pursue a collaborative project strategy by including different user and stakeholder groups in the development, testing and validation of tools and materials throughout the process of the project by conducting four case studies focusing on terrorism, floods, pandemics and earthquakes.

emBRACE (Building Resilience Amongst Communities in Europe)

Dr. A. Nuray Karanci    Middle East Technical University

The emBRACE project aims to improve the pan-European framing of the resilience concept. Using interdisciplinary, socially inclusive and collaborative methods, it will develop a conceptual and methodological approach to clarify how the resilience capacity of a society confronted with natural hazards and disasters can be characterized, defined and measured. Based on a systematic evaluation of the widest literature base, the project will first elaborate an initial conceptual framework. Existing datasets will be interrogated to identify variables that provide indications of resilience and which are framework consistent. The framework and data will then be ‘tested’ and ground truthed by means of several carefully-chosen European case studies which will be differentiated by hazard, governance setting, socio-demographic-economic context and scale.

TERRA - TERorism and RAdicalisation

Magda ROOZE, MA in Psychology and MBA in Business Administration, senior advisor of the trauma expert group Arq

Terrorism and radicalization seriously threaten the cohesion of societies all over the world. The European Union is aware of the complexity of the challenge. While many actors at different levels are involved, a unique role is recognized for victims of terrorism and their testimonies.
This project is composed of a European network-based prevention and learning program. TERRA is a European project supported by the European Commission DG Home Affairs. The objective of TERRA is to reinforce the positive role victims and former terrorists can play in relation to the prevention of radicalisation and providing practical guidance to specific target groups. Target groups and beneficiaries include victims, (potential) terrorists, EU member states and frontline-workers in the field of law-enforcement, rehabilitation, teaching, welfare and social workers, journalists, policy makers, and religious leaders.

What is the TERRA toolkit?

The material you can find on this website has been designed for professionals who come into contact through their work with a population which may be vulnerable to radicalisation. It explains why this subject may be of relevance to you, how you might notice if this issue was developing, and what you can do about it. Manuals which contain a fuller picture of this problem and an approach to solving it, and short fact sheets, can both be downloaded here free of charge. Furthermore you find films with testimonials of victims of terrorism, former radicals and interviews with representative of all the different target groups.
