EFPA welcomes the UN General Assembly’s political declaration on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of mental health

December 2025—The European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA) welcomes the UN General Assembly’s political declaration on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of mental health.

The political declaration is significant for mental health because it formally recognises mental health conditions as noncommunicable diseases and a global development priority. Beyond treatment, the declaration emphasises prevention and promotion, and highlights the close link between mental and physical health.

Mental health is a topic of significant importance in both a European and international context. EFPA and its Full Members were happy to support the consultation process that led to the declaration making its way to the UN General Assembly in New York in September, and to its approval in December. The declaration helps to provide political legitimacy and accountability for governments to integrate mental health into health systems and national NCD strategies.
