European Institutions Open Day 2012

18 Apr 2012

Save the date! On Saturday, 12 May, Brussels and the European district will be celebrating Europe Day for the 20th time. To mark the event, the European institutions are throwing open their doors.

News - European Institutions Open Day 2012

A day full of surprises awaits you, starting at 10 a.m.: a visit to EU buildings, a village of children's activities, information stands, dance, music and street performers.

A historic reason for an annual event:

Governmentschose to celebrate the European project on the 9th of May, as it is the anniversary of the founding event of the Schuman declaration on 9 May 1950. The European project has been celebrated for 20 years now.

For the 20th time, Europe Day is being celebrated in the spirit of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950. It will give everyone the opportunity to:

• visit the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the Commission, the Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions and the Ombudsman;

• celebrate the construction of Europe, all together, in a fun, family atmosphere.

This is an Open Day for everyone, to learn more about the EU while having fun. Commissioners, Heads of State or Government, ministers and MEPs - have you ever wanted to step briefly into their shoes?  We hope to see you 12 May!

Throughout the day, you can:

• access the meeting room of the College of Commissioners and the negotiation room where the Heads of State or Government or Ministers of Member States meet;

• take a seat in the Chamber where your elected MEPs hold parliamentary debates;

• go where representatives of European regions, social partners and representatives of civil society meet;

• discover, through discussions and meetings, some of the practical achievements of the EU for the benefit of citizens;

• join guided tours.

Bring the family! Located on the European Parliament's 'Solidarność 1980' Esplanade, a children's village will be welcoming young kids with workshops and interactive and educational games which will teach them all about Europe. And, for older children and adults, there will be a colourful mix of street performers and musicians.

European Year for Active Ageing

The year 2012 has been designated 'European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity Between Generations.' Curious to know more? Several organizations and associations will have their stands in the NGO village: they will be happy to present their activities, answer your questions and introduce you to some sports activities around the European Parliament.
